Interdisciplinary Aesthetics Project × Special Issue for Teacher Training Committee Members 16 | The Amazing Skill of Sichuan Opera Face Changing - "Sharing the Charm of Traditional Opera" Lecture

In Social Emotional Learning (SEL), self-awareness and emotion regulation can be presented through opera, allowing students to genuinely experience these aspects during the learning process.

This lecture was planned by Assistant Professor Chang Fu-ming of National Taitung University, a member of the Teacher Training Committee. Teacher Tao Hsiu-hua was specially invited to guide college students in establishing a connection between learning the fundamentals of Sichuan Opera and expressing themselves. This course allows students to learn the "Four Skills" and "Five Methods" of Sichuan Opera, then experience SEL (Social Emotional Learning), and finally integrate it into innovative thinking in interdisciplinary aesthetic education.

"Self-awareness" and "self-expression" are the core elements of social-emotional learning (SEL) for college students.

National Taitung University's university-wide, non-departmental bachelor's degree program held a lecture entitled "Sharing the Charm of Traditional Chinese Opera," inviting Professor Tao Hsiu-hua to guide students through exploring the deep connections between their own emotions and interpersonal relationships through body language, movements, and costumes, using her professional perspective on Sichuan opera face-changing.

The "self-awareness" in Sichuan Opera is primarily a method of emotional healing and psychological exploration that uses the metaphor of "face-changing." By observing the emotional differences between the inside and outside of the Sichuan Opera mask, it guides people to identify their true feelings. This process can help students realize the "social mask" they wear in different situations (roles) and achieve self-acceptance and inner balance by being aware of the true emotions behind the mask.

The core of Sichuan Opera's "emotional regulation" lies in the dramatic technique of "face-changing," which transforms abstract inner psychological states such as joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness into visible, instantly changing facial makeup images. This unique artistic expression allows actors to reveal the character's inner grief, fear, or strength in a practical and visual way when the character's inner emotions are fluctuating drastically.

Teacher Tao first explained the history of Sichuan Opera through lectures, and then led the students to learn through practical demonstrations of the "Four Skills" and "Five Methods". She guided the students on how behaviors such as "movement", "singing", and "melody presentation" can become ways of self-care and emotional regulation in daily life, helping students to achieve inner healing by connecting themselves with others through opera and music.
