Interdisciplinary Aesthetics Project × Teacher Training Committee Special Issue 29 | Between Frog Songs and the Land: Seeing the Connection of Interdisciplinary Aesthetics Education Through the Zhuluo Tree Frog

This post is a little late, but the story of the Zhuluo tree frog is definitely not outdated.

Back in March and April of the semester, Professor Hongling and I completed two interdisciplinary aesthetic empowerment workshops on the theme of the Zhuluo tree frog. However, it wasn't until the end of the semester that I had the time to sit down and organize and share them. Although it was a bit late, I believe that these two workshops sparked a wonderful story that is worth sharing.

The Zhuluo tree frog is a protected species endemic to Taiwan, primarily inhabiting the Yunlin-Chiayi-Tainan region. Its survival is closely linked to bamboo forest environments, agricultural development, local culture, and ecological conservation. The first workshop was led by Zhuang Mengxian, CEO of Frog Fun Nature Ecological Consulting Co., Ltd., who shared his years of practical experience in Zhuluo tree frog conservation, covering topics from biodiversity and habitat creation to green conservation labeling. He demonstrated that local conservation is not merely an ecological issue, but requires the joint participation of communities, farmers, and various sectors.

The second session featured Manager Peng Zhenru sharing case studies on ecological photography, eco-friendly branding, and local collaborations. She demonstrated that aesthetic appreciation isn't just about admiring the beauty of nature; it can also be achieved through images, sound, design, and storytelling, encouraging more people to learn about the Zhuluo tree frog and care about the land we live on. Manager Peng also emphasized that instead of simply telling people about the importance of ecological conservation, it's more effective to first make them like the Zhuluo tree frog. This requires utilizing its charming and endearing photographs to inspire love, understanding, and a desire to protect it.

At the end of the workshop, with the support of the project's funding, we specially purchased a Zhuluo tree frog plush toy designed and made by Frog Fun Nature Ecology Consulting Co., Ltd., and gave it to each participating teacher and student. Seeing everyone happily taking photos with this adorable "Chiayi Frog," we hope that what everyone took home was not just this Zhuluo tree frog, but also a heartfelt willingness to continue caring for this land.
