When Art Becomes Everyday Life: A Cross-Disciplinary Aesthetic Practice at Pingtung Dacheng Elementary School

The "2023-2024 Kaohsiung-Pingtung Area Community Exchange," held on January 8th at Dacheng Elementary School in Pingtung County, brought together 18 partner schools from the Kaohsiung-Pingtung area. Several members of the project team, including Professors Chao Hui-ling, Kao Chen-feng, and Chen Chun-di, as well as teacher training committee members Associate Professor Tsai Pei-kuei, Assistant Professor Kao Chia-hung, and Vice Dean Teng Tsung-sheng, also participated. Through a campus tour and explanation by Principal Chung Hsiu-feng of Dacheng Elementary School, and course sharing by Directors Yang Yi-cheng and Chen Yi-ping, the practical results of interdisciplinary aesthetic education were showcased.

Pingtung Dacheng Elementary School transformed itself from a school facing closure crisis into the first public-private partnership experimental arts elementary school in Taiwan. With diverse classroom landscapes, it connects teachers, students, parents, and the community, allowing aesthetic education and SEL (Student-Led Learning) to be naturally integrated into the daily school life.

With art at its core, the school develops a flexible and in-depth interdisciplinary curriculum that combines the five senses, field trips, and physical exploration, starting from the fields of nature, information, and language. This curriculum guides students to cultivate their understanding and problem-solving abilities through collaborative learning and hands-on practice.

During the community-based learning exchange and comprehensive seminar, the cross-disciplinary aesthetic education facilitators, through the "big hand leading the little hand" approach of community communication, acted as searchlights for each other, illuminating the way forward, and also deeply felt the support and power brought by the community.

Interdisciplinary aesthetic education is not just a slogan, nor is it merely a formality. Even after students graduate, art seasons end, and artists depart, an appreciation for beauty has taken root in the children's hearts and continues to grow.
