Keelung City Chung Cheng Junior High School - Symphony of the Sea

Keelung's unique topography, nestled between mountains and the sea, has fostered distinctive geographical landscapes and a rich maritime industry, history, and culture. Students and faculty can overlook Keelung Harbor from the school, observing the comings and goings of various vessels. The student residential community is also adjacent to the fishing port and fishing villages.

The ocean, with its ever-changing light and shadow, diverse colors, rich ecology, healing atmosphere, and environmental warnings, has become a source of inspiration for painters, musicians, and writers. This program, "Symphony of the Ocean," takes SDGS-14 Sustainable Ocean and Conservation as its starting point, with art courses (visual arts/music) as the main axis, connecting with other subjects (language arts, physics, chemistry, biology, physical education, and tutoring activities) and students' life experiences to cultivate students' comprehensive aesthetic literacy, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.

Through four units—"Color Cruise," "Waves of Words," "Hearing the Ocean—Debuchy's Symphonic Sketches," and "Ocean Reconstruction Plant"—students are guided through interdisciplinary learning. The course is rich and diverse, allowing students to experience and utilize their senses to learn and explore local and international ocean-related issues in authentic contexts. Students also express their concern and response to these issues through creative works using color, words, music, and marine debris.

This course is designed using the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) strategy, employing creative activities (painting, music, and writing) as a medium to guide students in becoming aware of their own emotions, managing stress, and understanding the feelings of others. Through collaboration, students enhance their interpersonal skills and sense of responsibility, achieving five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, interpersonal skills, and responsible decision-making. Artistic creation provides a space without standard answers, allowing students to express and explore their inner world through concrete actions and creations, achieving emotional expression and mental well-being.
