This course, "Flowers," explores innermost thoughts and occasional expressions of affection. Combining Chinese language, counseling, and performing arts courses, it centers on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) to address the interpersonal and learning needs of eighth-grade students who are in adolescence, experiencing intense emotional fluctuations, and desiring independence while being prone to impulsive expression. Students often use simplified words like "feeling good" and "feeling bad" to describe their emotions in daily life, indicating that their emotional awareness and expression vocabulary still need to be expanded.
The course begins with "awareness," guiding students to identify their own emotional states. Through the literary text "A Flowering Tree," students understand how words convey expectations, disappointments, and emotional meanings, cultivating social awareness and empathy. Further, in performing arts classes, students practice expressing emotions at a safe distance through puppetry and voice exercises. In collaborative activities in groups of 2-3, they learn communication, coordination, and respect for others' feelings. The course progressively develops students' self-awareness, social awareness, and relationship skills, helping them build more mature and responsible emotional expression and interpersonal interaction abilities.
