Emotional education is crucial for first-graders. We begin with two picture books to introduce them to social-emotional learning. "The Emotion Hotel" compares people to a hotel, with the teacher acting as the manager, managing the various emotions of the guests. "Color Monster: Emotion Doctor" offers solutions for dealing with mixed emotions. The course design begins with "The Emotion Hotel" and continues with "Emotion Doctor." It then includes cross-disciplinary mathematical shape jigsaw puzzles, monster bookmarks, and "hammer-dyed coasters." The final lesson, "Spring Feast," features a tea party using coasters and reading under a tree. Students explore the mountains, explore nature, release stress through hammering, and recite poetry and read under the willow trees in the gentle spring breeze. Emotional education is subtly integrated into their lives.
