Middle school students' learning is gradually expanding beyond the campus to the community. Last semester, they began learning about the cities, towns, and industries they live in. In the social and general areas, they explored their hometown's industries and innovations, and took courses exploring careers such as those related to industry and craftspeople. The next semester will focus on the impact of environmental issues and exploring the career paths of indigo dyeing craftsmen.
Middle grades began learning indigo dyeing techniques. Building on the tie-dyeing and folding techniques from the previous semester, students collaborated with the creative stitch-dyeing of imported butterflies during Butterfly Week. The school-based butterfly curriculum was integrated into indigo dyeing and stitch-dyeing activities. The curriculum was structured using SEL (Social Emotional Learning) to overcome lows. Through interviews with artisans and their own personal experiences with indigo dyeing, students incorporated emotional education into their writing, describing the methods and emotions they used to overcome difficulties during their indigo dyeing journey. Through course activities and written text, students internalized positive approaches to coping with setbacks, cultivating resilience and the motivation to keep moving forward.
