Chia-Feng Elementary School, Hsinchu County—Heart to Heart, Art for a Sustainable Future

This program centers on the "SDGs (Global Sustainable Development Goals)" and combines the "International Diplomat" curriculum for sixth graders at Chia-Feng Elementary School with art courses. It guides students to understand global sustainability issues from an international perspective and uses art creation as a medium of translation to transform abstract sustainability concepts into concrete expressions that can be understood and responded to, thereby cultivating action learners with international concern and aesthetic literacy.
The course begins with an "International Diplomats" course to introduce SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) topics. Through collaborative teaching by international and Chinese teachers, students are guided to understand global cases, engage in discussions and reflections, and select the most relatable sustainability issues. Students then design logos and create stamps, transforming their personal concerns into tangible sustainability symbols. Art courses guide students to translate their chosen SDGs topics into visual images using A4 watercolor techniques, cultivating their ability to express viewpoints and convey global concern through art. Digital design tools are integrated throughout the course to help students optimize visual presentation and enhance their digital and aesthetic literacy.
The course integrates the five core competencies of SEL (Social and Emotional Learning) throughout its implementation, guiding students to cultivate self-awareness and social perception in issue exploration; learn self-management in the design and creation process; and develop interpersonal skills and responsible decision-making ability in teamwork, exhibition planning and charity sales, so that the learning process takes into account the cognitive, affective and behavioral levels.
In the advanced learning phase, students use digital tools to organize their SDGs research and creation process, engage in personal reflection, and give oral presentations. Teachers, in turn, combine student work and presentations to create multimedia exhibition resources, expanding the learning impact through QR codes and online exhibitions. During the exhibition, teachers and students from different grade levels are invited to interact, view the exhibition, and provide feedback, promoting understanding, dialogue, and shared values regarding SDGs issues on campus.
Through a comprehensive learning journey encompassing "issue understanding—artistic creation—exhibition interaction—public service action," this program guides students from passive learners to active global citizens. The curriculum is centered on SDG 4 "Quality Education," cultivating students' understanding of sustainability issues, developing global citizenship awareness and social activism, and extending to SDG 17 "Partnerships." Through interdisciplinary collaboration and public service actions within the school, it aims to promote sustainability through education. Furthermore, it flexibly addresses other SDGs based on students' areas of interest, showcasing the diversity and authenticity of sustainable education.
The course ultimately uses the process of artistic creation, exhibition feedback, and reflection as the basis for overall course evaluation and learning feedback, shaping a "flow reciprocity" learning environment. This allows students to transform from learners into global citizens through two-way interaction of being understood and responded to, and promotes the overall growth of SEL (Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Interpersonal Interaction, and Responsible Decision-Making) abilities. This makes art learning a key medium for understanding the world, connecting with others, and taking action.
