This course, centered around the principle of "starting from local culture and connecting to a global perspective," emphasizes the rich cultural and artistic value inherent in Malaysia's diverse cultural landscape. Through a deep understanding of the traditional costumes, visual vocabulary, and aesthetics of life of diverse communities, including Malays, Chinese, Indians, and indigenous peoples, students will develop a respect for and appreciation of local culture, further fostering cross-cultural understanding and comparative perspectives.
The curriculum integrates interdisciplinary elements across visual arts, performing arts, lifestyle technology, and social studies, allowing students to draw upon everyday experiences, observe and perceive cultural phenomena, and then transform them into concrete artistic creations. In addition to learning color schemes, pattern design, composition techniques, and design principles (such as repetition, contrast, and white space), students will also strengthen their creative thinking, detailed observation, and hands-on skills through hands-on activities such as tie-dyeing, costume matching, and mask and accessory making.
Furthermore, the course emphasizes art as a medium for self-expression and social communication, allowing students to explore their personal emotions and reflect on their identity through their creative work, thereby developing empathy, aesthetic judgment, and a respect for diverse values. By exploring the historical context and social implications behind culture, students not only appreciate the uniqueness of art from various ethnic groups but also understand the collective memories and cultural wisdom they carry.
The course focuses on contemporary social issues and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), hoping to extend students' passion for culture and art to a concern for the environment and society, cultivating engaged artistic citizens. Through creative fashion shows, group collaborations, and public sharing activities, students will strengthen their expressive skills and teamwork, demonstrate their understanding and respect for cultural diversity, and translate their learning into practical action to respond to the needs of society and the world.
