Aesthetic Education – Making SEL a Everyday Feature in the Educational Environment

The Interdisciplinary Aesthetic Education Project, in collaboration with the National Education Administration of the Ministry of Education's High School Curriculum Art Subject Center, co-hosted a workshop on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and aesthetic teaching on November 11th. More than 200 teachers from across Taiwan participated online, connecting the warmth of elementary, middle, and high school education during Typhoon Fung-wong.

In this online lecture, Professor Su Pei used numerous teaching examples to guide everyone in seeing and appreciating the various possible methods for applying SEL (Student Learning Experience) in the classroom. He reminded us, "In fact, every teacher is already practicing SEL in the teaching process, even if they may not be consciously aware of it. This practice not only helps students but also nourishes the teachers themselves."

The lecture incorporated a variety of online interactive tools (Padlet, Slido, Curipod, Kahoot) to allow teachers to experience the spirit of "social-emotional learning" in group discussions, including listening, collaborating, empathizing, and providing support and feedback.

In the post-pandemic era, people face challenges from natural disasters and man-made calamities, and life is filled with various uncertainties and pressures. Even adults struggle to cope, let alone students whose minds and bodies are undergoing rapid development. This further highlights the importance and value of socio-emotional learning, which helps improve the resilience and adaptability of every educator and learner.

In her concluding remarks, Professor Huang Chunmin pointed out the inspiration offered by existentialist philosophy: "We cannot choose the era or family we are born into, but we can choose what kind of person we become. SEL and aesthetic education can provide us with the attitudes and methods to choose freely."

Only when teachers themselves are emotionally stable and at ease can they guide students to settle down and deepen their learning and thinking.
Thank you to all the teachers who braved the storms and worked together across Taiwan. On the path of education, we took deep breaths, engaged all our senses, adjusted our pace, and continued moving forward. Teachers are the most resilient and gentle souls in the educational field.
