The four-day (July 13-16) "Bamboo Art Aesthetics: Cross-Domain Living" 2026 Summer Cross-Domain Aesthetics Teacher Training Program has successfully concluded. Program coordinators Professor Zhao Huiling, Professor Huang Chunmin, and Professor Gao Zhenfeng attended the opening ceremony to offer their encouragement and welcome teachers from all over Taiwan, including the north, central, south, east, and outlying islands, to embark on a bamboo art learning journey that integrates traditional craftsmanship, aesthetic education, and cross-domain teaching.

This workshop, led by bamboo artisan Mr. Hsu Min-sheng, began by exploring the types, growing environments, and cultural context of bamboo in Taiwan. It guided participants to understand the characteristics of bamboo and provided hands-on experience with various bamboo weaving techniques, including bamboo strip making, hexagonal weaving, herringbone weaving, and edge weaving. Through progressive practice, participants created hexagonal storage baskets, bamboo lamps, and small bamboo utensils. In the repetitive interaction between their hands and bamboo, they deeply appreciated the delicate craftsmanship, structural wisdom, and aesthetic appeal inherent in bamboo art. Mr. Hsu also incorporated rattan weaving and composite materials, guiding participants to create using different materials such as bamboo, rattan, bamboo strips, and nylon rope, showcasing the diverse design possibilities of this traditional craft. The large bamboo lamp, inspired by a fish trap, allowed participants to experience the creative process from two-dimensional structure to three-dimensional artwork through weaving, assembling, and creative design. Each piece displayed a unique personal style and demonstrated the potential for the fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern aesthetics.

During the four-day workshop, the teachers not only focused on hands-on practice but also actively exchanged teaching experiences and curriculum design ideas. Through repeated weaving, refining, and creation, they reconsidered how to integrate bamboo culture, sustainability issues, art and design, and lifestyle aesthetics into an interdisciplinary curriculum. This guided students from material exploration and craft experience to cultural understanding, cultivating their observation skills, creativity, and aesthetic appreciation, and developing more diverse interdisciplinary learning experiences. Many teachers shared that these four days were not just about learning craft techniques, but also a precious time to slow down, focus on creation, and reconnect with themselves. In today's rapidly developing digital age, feeling the texture and rhythm of bamboo through their hands, reflecting on their thoughts through repeated weaving, and rediscovering the focus and emotion of creation.

"Bamboo Art Aesthetics: Cross-Domain Living" not only allows teachers to experience the cultural heritage of traditional bamboo art, but also connects art, aesthetics, culture, and sustainable living through craft creation, inspiring new ideas for cross-domain curriculum design. It is hoped that every teacher can bring this inspiration and energy from bamboo art back to the classroom, continuously practice cross-disciplinary aesthetic education, accompany students to discover and appreciate beauty in life, and embark on a richer and deeper learning journey between cultural inheritance and innovation.
