Dahu Elementary School, Xiangshan District, Hsinchu City – Let's Take Action! Ocean Watch Team

This course is based on the senior-level school-established course "Come! Come to Realize Your Dreams - Dream Practitioners". Continuing from last semester, through watching documentaries and interacting with ecological conservation advocates, students have a sufficient understanding of the current state of the oceans around Taiwan and the plight of marine life, and can take more targeted and conscious actions.

This semester, senior students cycled to Xinpu Elementary School in Miaoli for an exchange program. They transformed the whale-and-dolphin-shaped diffusers they made last semester into a key activity for the inter-school exchange, sharing their hands-on experiences to help the students from the exchange school get to know their whale and dolphin friends and connect emotionally. With the help of e-books, the students collaborated on a script about the Formosan white dolphin, dividing tasks such as prop making, puppet manipulation, and voice and facial expression interpretation. They appropriately contributed their individual efforts within the team, performing the play at a nearby kindergarten to convey the importance of marine conservation to their younger siblings. In addition to artistic creation, the students also went into the community to collect trash, which they then sorted and recycled at school to reduce the chances of it ending up in the ocean. They also transformed old desks and chairs into practical carts, achieving the 3Rs of waste reduction. Finally, the children dedicated their annual graduating year's ceramic slabs to whales and dolphins, carefully carving their care for their whale and dolphin friends, and reused the stage props from the play for their graduation ceremony.

This course aims to use art to enable students to demonstrate their observation and care for nature and animal life, transforming knowledge into a warm and touching connection.
